Thyroiditis

  • Definition

Thyroiditis refers to a group of disorders characterized by inflammation of the thyroid gland.

  • Types and
    Characteristics

    • Chronic Lymphocytic Thyroiditis (Hashimoto's Thyroiditis)

his is the most common type of chronic thyroid inflammation and is an autoimmune disorder that often causes hypothyroidism. It is found in over 60% of Korean women. Treatment with thyroid hormone replacement is only required when hormone levels are abnormal. Because long-standing thyroiditis may increase the risk of developing thyroid cancer, regular ultrasound monitoring is recommended.

    • Subacute Thyroiditis

This form of thyroiditis may occur following a viral infection or without any identifiable cause. It often presents with neck pain, tenderness, and temporary hyperthyroid symptoms.

  • Symptoms

Pain and swelling in the thyroid area, thyroid dysfunction symptoms (hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism), fatigue, and fever.

  • Treatment

Depending on the cause, treatment may include antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, or thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
